Julie knows romance! So let’s dig right in and hear what she has to say!

True Romance

I have a confession to make: I’m addicted to romance. I suppose that’s not as bad as being addicted to Twinkies or Ho Hos because at least it won’t slap extra pounds on my hips. But it does compel me to hunt down romance in every conceivable form like a heat-seeking missile. Books, movies, date night with my husband, or just getting a “fix” by writing my own romantic novel—to me, it’s all good.A_A LOVE AT ANY COST_FINAL COVER

So when a friend asked me to do a guest blog on romantic stories from my own life, I strained my brain trying to come up with some stomach-fluttering event that was so sensational, sighs of envy would drift forth into cyberspace. But the honest-to-God truth is that my husband has never danced with me in the dining room or kidnapped me at work to take me on a secret bed-and-breakfast anniversary trip like several of my friends. True, he fixes me coffee every morning, holds my hand in the car, and sent me roses at the birth of our son and daughter. But as far as a heart-melting, knee-weakening moment that swept me off my feet, I was alarmed to realize that I—a card-carrying romantic—was drawing a blank.

So that got me thinking—hard! I mean, I’ve been married almost 35 years to this wonderful man and consider our relationship one of the most romantic I have ever seen. But I can’t validate that with stories that would qualify for the Romance Hall of Fame. So what makes our relationship so special, I wondered?

FINAL COVER- A Light in the Window v_5 low resAnd then I thought about what romance is really all about. Being cherished, loved, made to feel like you are the most precious thing to someone. It’s basically Ephesians 5:25 in a nutshell—husbands, cherish your wives. It’s why romance sales account for 40% of the fiction market—women want to be cherished.

All of a sudden, I realized my husband does that for me every day of my life. A tender look, a lingering kiss or just spooning at night. Telling me he never gets tired of being with me (yeah, I know, his boredom threshold must be pretty high), or dancing with me at weddings when I know he’d rather have a root canal. And then there were all those times he supported me and took my side in front of the kids, even when I was wrong. Followed by gentle conviction and prayer when we were alone. It’s a big, hulking guy reading my debut novel instead of Sports Illustrated and then tearing up when tragedy befalls a favorite character. It’s swooning at the sink when he kisses me from behind, purposely mimicking a scene in my book. It’s a man who makes me feel like I am the moon and the stars to him and tells me life with me is never dull.

Yes, my name is Julie Lessman, and I am a romance addict. And my husband is my biggest supplier.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I think that was the sweetest post on romance I’ve ever read! Thank you so much, Julie, for joining us!

  1. What a fabulous post. I cannot wait to read one of Julie’s novels.
    Thank you for the giveaway
    campbellamyd at gmail dot com

  2. Love this post! Love anything about Julie….her books, her personality!! I can’t wait to read her newest ….thanks for the chance!
(J., still need prayers for back pain)……

    1. Oh, PATTY, I pray you do too, my friend! And believe me, it IS possible to have a romantic and rock-solid marriage like Marcy and Patrick O’Connor’s because their marriage is based on my marriage to my hubby, where God is in the middle. So, yes, my novels are fiction in that the heroes and heroines are always attractive, but the lessons they learn and the love the share is VERY real … I know because I’ve taken it from my own life. So keep praying and applying God’s precepts, you sweet thing, and let me know when God has given you the desire of your heart.

Hugs and GOOD LUCK in the contest!

    1. MELISSA … oh, goodness, I do like to torture my characters, don’t I??? But I always bring them out safely on the other side with God ever stronger in their lives, so am I forgiven??? 🙂 Good luck, sweetie!

  3. Wow, what a SWEET post! That really is “twu wuv”, as my family likes to quote from “The Princess Bride” :). I can’t wait to read this book!
    genuinegagirl (at) gmail (dot)com

    1. LOL … CALLIE … indeed!! What my hubby and I have is definitely “twu wuv”!! And would you believe neither of us have ever seen that movie, but we’ve been wanting to!! Good luck, sweetie. 🙂

  4. Oh, my gosh. I might cry here and there are people around, y’all!
Aww.. Julie. So sweet. Won’t you say a prayer for this girl to catch a wonderful man too later on in her life? Bless you for this lovely, lovely post.

Please include me in the giveaway too.

Hope everyone has a happy valentine’s day.

    1. Oh, you bet, GANISE … putting you on my prayer hit list right now, sweetie-pie, so let me be one of the first to know, okay??? You’re in the contest, my friend, and here’s to a win!

  5. MELISSA … yeah, I tend toward the “heart-twisting” in my books since I’m a CDQ (caffeinated drama queen) who likes lots of angst and drama in my books. Which is probably a good thing for my hubby since I tend to put it in my books rather than my marriage … 🙂 Good luck, Melissa, and here’s to a win!

    1. Trust me, KATIE … I would “love” for you to win one of my books, too, girl, so if you want to check out my brand of “passion with a purpose” writing, I recommend you hop on over to my “EXCERPTS” tab of my website where I have posted my favorite romantic and spiritual scenes from each of my books. Here’s the link and GOOD LUCK in the contest!! JULIE’S EXCERPTS

    1. Aw, CARRIE, it SO blesses me to see one of my favorite authors here cheering me on too — THANK YOU!! You are one of the sweetest gals I know and I SO appreciate both your support and your friendship. And goodness, you are already on my list to receive Love at Any Cost, so if you win here, I’ll have to put you on the list for the next one, right???

    1. Thanks, JAMIELYNNE!!! If you haven’t read any of my books before, I’ll tell you what I told Katie J above — consider checking out my brand of “passion with a purpose” writing by hopping on over to my “EXCERPTS” tab of my website where I have posted my favorite romantic and spiritual scenes from each of my books. Here’s the link and GOOD LUCK in the contest!! JULIE’S EXCERPTS

  8. I really liked this post. I love your honesty Julie! I think this is one of the biggest lesson’s we all have to learn is what true love is. I know I have found that with the Lord…and wow…He is a wonderful teacher. Now I hope to find what you and your husband have…and my parents. I love hearing stories of couples that stay together for years and still love each other. Congratulations on almost 35 years!!!
I would love to be entered to win. My e-mail is sunydey26@aol.com

      1. We are all still praying for you Julie! I love that you call it your prayer hit list…lol. My life is in His hands so whatever direction He chooses for me..that is where I want to go! Hope you have a great Valentine’s Day!
And thanks for praying for me too =)

  9. JOHNETTE!!! Oh, you sweet thing, you — you prayed for me this morning on Seekerville, and it blessed the socks off of me, girl — THANK YOU!! And I am putting you on my prayer hit list right now for a Godly mate of your own, okay? You sound WAY too sweet not to have someone loving on you like you deserve. Thanks for coming by and GOOD LUCK in the contest, my friend!!

    Hugs and more hugs,

    1. Always, Sherri!! And I’ve been out of commission about five hours today going to the doctor, plus I have my Seeker blog up today, so I don’t get over here as often as I like, but I will in the days ahead. Thanks for having me here!!

    1. LOL, KATHLEEN … you are ONE determined girl, you know that?? If anybody deserves a copy of AHU, it’s YOU, my friend, so I hope you win. You’re gonna LOVE IT!!

  10. Julie, this was in itself a very romantic romance story of you and your hubby. That is what I call true love. My husband was like that. He’s been gone 16 years now, and altho I know he is in the best place ever, I wish it had been even later in life. But, GOD knows best. Those who bring flowers and go to B&B aren’t always that loving every day. Better to have a good man that shows you every day in so many little ways how much he loves you and cherishes you. I hope the two of you have a great Valentine’s day together, and many more. I would love to win one of your books.
Thanks to you, and thanks to Sherri for having you for a guest. Love ya’ girl. GOD bless you. Maxie mac262(at)me(dot)com

    1. MAXIE!!! Soooo proud of you, girl — you’re making the rounds and deserve to win a real book (not e-book), so here’s to a win!! And I am SO thrilled you were married to the love of your life, but sad, too, that God took him so early. Ours is not reason why, but OH, reunion will be sweet, my friend. And you are blessed to have had a marriage like that because most people don’t. 😦

    1. Hey, CARRIE … thanks for coming by, you sweetheart you, since you have SO much spare time, you little stinker … get back to that ms.!! 😉 I still cannot believe that the sophisticated and intellectual Dr. Carrie Pagels likes MY books — what a TOTAL blessing!!!

  11. Oh, Julie….you have me tearing up here! Good gravy! I absolutely love when you talk about your husband…it’s so inspiring! To know that true love is real and kicking gives me so much hope for my own future. I’m in awe right now! =*) I’m sending you a hug because this post has warmed my heart! Thanks so much for being such a good role model!

    1. Hey, EM … boy, you’ve been busy making the rounds, my friend — thanks for coming by!! And, yeah, you better believe true love is real, as long as God is smack dab in the center!! But you should already know that from your own mom and dad — you guys seem like SUCH a close family — I LOVE IT!!

I’m pulling for a win for you, my friend!!

  12. Yes, I know the feeling! My husband is so “into me” it’s not funny. But he doesn’t send flowers, buy me jewelry, etc., but he’s there for me 24/7 and puts our family first.

    1. YAY, SUSAN … sooooo glad to hear that because it’s actually pretty rare from what I can tell, so you are blessed too!! I always told my daughter that you want to marry a man who loves you just a little bit more than you love him, and I had Marcy O’Connor, the mother in my family saga, tell her youngest daughter that too, because I really believe it’s true. 🙂 Sounds like you and I both did that a wee bit. 🙂 Good luck in the contest, sweetie!!

  13. Julie,
You are so right about romance being an addiction! My boyfriend laughs at me for being such a “girly-girl”. I can’t wait for Love At Any Cost to come out!!!! I saved just enough on my B&N christmas giftcard to buy it when it comes out! OMG, Julie, what an endearing post!! How awesome is Keith! As always, I pray that the upcoming book will be farmore successful than the last- not only in sales but in the lives it will touch.

    Ashley 🙂

    1. ASH!!!! Gosh, girl, I’ve missed you and I was JUST praying for you this morning, for you and your sweet guy and your dreams of a shelter some day, so see?? I haven’t forgotten!! If I were you, girl, I’d preorder LAAC now since it’s about half price because it will go up after it releases!! Your guy sounds like SUCH a gem — I am absolutely THRILLED for you, my friend. Thanks SO MUCH for coming by, and don’t order LAAC until you see if you win here, okay? 😉

  14. JULIE!!!! Every time I read one of your posts I either cry or laugh out loud. Today you made me cry! I love your romance with your husband. When you said ” I was alarmed to realize that I—a card-carrying romantic—was drawing a blank” I could so relate, but then in the next instant I thought oh but the man that is there all the time through thick and thin, cheering me on through ANY endeavor I seek to accomplish, ready with a hug to comfort, the one who tears up over a sappy movie, and the one that has remained faithful for almost 28 years of marriage…and then as I continued reading you said so much better than I ever could what romance means to you. Almost the exact way I feel. So I may not get flowers or chocolate or romantic dinners, but I get the best man I could possibly ever have dreamed up. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

    Julie@My Favorite Pastime

    1. Gosh, JULES … it’s downright scary how much alike we are (for you!!)!!! That makes my heart SO glad that you have a guy like that too. We are SOOOO incredibly blessed, and I for one NEVER take it for granted or forget it. For too many years (till I was 28), I did not think I would ever get married or even find someone to love me like Keith does, but HOLY COW, God is SOOOO faithful when we apply His precepts, in EVERYTHING, but especially in love. 🙂

Thanks for coming by, you sweet thing, and gosh, if you win, I’ll have to put your name on my free list for Dare to Love Again since you already won LAAC!! I can’t write ’em as fast as you can win ’em, I’ll tell you!!

    1. Hey, KAREN, me either, because I sure hope you do think it’s a “masterpiece” because RT didn’t think it was, but then they don’t generally like my books, I think maybe because they think they’re too sensual?? I don’t know. All I know is one of the reviewers gave me a bad review on APD and used the line “This is not your mother’s inspirational fiction.” She meant it as a cut, but Revell used it as a tagline on the front of the book, so na-na-na-na-na-na to RT!! 😉

      Good luck, sweetie!

  15. I have GOT to get my husband to read one of your books. Seriously!! 🙂 Thanks for sharing Julie, that was so sweet and fun to read!! Love you!!

    1. Oh btw my hubby is there 100% for me and can never do enough too! Just gotta get him inspired in the romance department! Love the kitchen inspired bit.. 🙂

    2. NOELA!!! Hey, sweetie … soooo fun to see you here, and do you know that I actually do have some diehard male reader friends? I’ll never forget the year I checked in at the ACFW Conference, and it was a guy who registered me. I told him my name was Julie Lessman and looked up and said, “Oh, wow, I just loved your last book”!! After I picked myself up off the floor, I asked him if he was joking and he said no, that he was a romance writer and reader and he loves my books!! Sooooo fun!! So, you never know … maybe your hubby would like them!! Mine does … 😉

  16. Julie!!! How sweet you and your husband are! I love hearing about the romantic things that your husband does for you… you two are so adorable!!! =)

    1. HA!! HE’S the “adorable” one, ELYSSA, not me, so I’m here to tell you that true love like Marcy and Patrick’s IS possible because I am incredibly blessed to have it, and, in fact, Marcy and Patrick’s marriage is based on my marriage, so I’m praying you have the same thing someday, sweetie. 🙂

      Good luck!!

  17. Thanks for sharing about your ongoing romance of 35 years!

It’s extremely difficult to put down one of your books! Last night I was waiting in the car and I was cracking up while reading about a new character named Gabe, in your book, A Hope Undaunted!! Your characters seem very real. So much so that I don’t like one of them:). But most of them I like a lot!

  18. Truly a sweet post! I’m blessed with an awesome husband also, he makes every day special. Thanks for a chance to win one of Julie’s books, she knows how to touch my heart with lovely, romantic stories I treasure.

    1. Hey, MERRY, thank you, my friend, and I am THRILLED that you have an awesome hubby too!! Hope your V-Day was extra special and here’s to a win here — GOOD LUCK!!

  19. Now, Julie’s writings to me are as hard to resist as chocolate!! They’re very romantic and full of God’s love. I crave her new books and devour them as soon as one is in my hand. Sure can’t gain weight on that…except the gain of knowledge and widening of my territory of the finest writing.

    In Christian Joy,
    Barb Shelton

  20. BARB!!! Always makes my day to see your sweet smile, my friend, and as busy as you are, too!! Thanks for coming by and LOVE the chocolate comparison, girl!! LOL … yeah, no one can accuse my books of being caloric, no matter HOW fat they are!!

    Good luck, Barb!!

  21. I believe everyday love and romance, is exactly how you described it! Little antidotes of affection, little nudges of affection, and the calming balm of knowing that your husband supports you in everything that you do! Uplifts you when your down, cheers with you whilst your celebrating, and walks hand in hand with you throughout all of life’s adventures! The most special way a marriage can be peppered with romance are in the little unexpected moments that a man and wife can share… little notes left for each other in the mornings, cards sitting on chairs or tacked up on bathroom mirrors, surprise gifts even when its not a holiday or offical celebration,… to simply being in sync with each other and enjoying each other’s company. Romance doesn’t have to be a BIG moment that resonates in your mind,… sometimes its the understated and unsuspecting ordinary moments that make a lasting impression!

I am entering for a chance to win “A Light in the Window” because its the cornerstone story that leads to everything throughout the O’ Connor Saga {Daughters of Boston, Winds of Change, and then, the Cousins take their turn: Hearts of San Francisco!}… every family’s legacy begins with the couple who first sparked the foundation that everyone else would stand upon. I’d love the chance to read Marcy + Patrick’s story!

    1. JORIE, HELLO!!! Good to see you here, my friend, and I LOVE your statement that said, “Romance doesn’t have to be a BIG moment that resonates in your mind,… sometimes its the understated and unsuspecting ordinary moments that make a lasting impression!”

Amen and amen to that, my friend!! Here’s hoping your beautiful comment brings you a win — GOOD LUCK!!
